Root Words knowing root words can give you clues to
what the word means
 voc as in vocabulary and dict as in dictionary mean
“word, voice, to speak.”

 Lets see what you understand, first underline the root
of each term then complete the Using Root Clues
exercise on page 11, you have 5 minutes to complete
this with your table.
Avocation
 N. A pastime or hobby; a profession practiced with
enjoyment.
 In your notebooks write down three avocations
Vocal
 Adj. 1. Connected with speaking or with the voice.
Vocalist
 N. Singer
 Name three vocalist who you believe have the best
voices.

 Noun - A list or collection of words or phrases of a
language

 N. A job; a calling or inclination toward a type of work
or service.

 dict (to speak, to say) give you clues about meaning.
Addictive
 Adj. Habit-forming, hard to break away from, easy to
say yes to.
 Smoking is very addictive.
Contradict
 V. To speak against, to say the opposite of.
 Mrs. Ingle speaks Spanish very well.
 Mrs. Ingle does not speak Spanish well
Dictation
 N. The act of saying words for someone else to write
down.
 For example- In French class, Ms. Benoit gave us
dictation each week to improve our ability to
understand and write the words we heard.
Dictator
 N. A person who commands and rules with total
authority.
 Dictators expect their commands to be followed, not
questioned.
 Can you name any dictator’s?
Predict
 V. To say what will happen in the future, often using
reason or experience.
 One of our reading strategies is predict.
Verdict
 [ also derived from Latin vere meaning “truly”]
 N. The words of decision from a jury.
 The jury handed down a guilty verdict.
