





Sentences show your understanding of the
word and ability to use it well
Sentences may change the tense or form of a
word, but must use the new form of the word
correctly

Example: Change opulent (adj.) to opulence (noun)
Writing Effective Sentences
Sentences must give enough context to
show your understanding of the word.
 If word could be replaced by several
others, you have not given enough
context.
 Example: Opulent (adj. 1) characterized by or

exhibiting extreme affluence; 2) wealthy, rich, or affluent; 3)
richly supplied, abundant)
 No: The house was opulent.
 Yes: The opulent house was decorated with velvet curtains,
gold statues, and crystal chandeliers.
