What is in Tattoo Ink?
 Contents can vary (not regulated, pigment mixing)
 Cosmetic- iron oxide
 Red- mercury sulfide (cinnabar), ferric hydrate (sienna, sandalwood,
brazilwood
 Black: Carbon (India ink), iron oxide, logwood
What is the Tattooing Process?
 Pigment inserted into dermis
 Phagocytes engulf particles, trapping pigment when upper dermis is
healed
 Needles pierce at rate of 50 to 3,000 times per minute
What are Adverse Side Effects to
Tattoos?
 Infection
 Allergies (ink)
 Burning/swelling during MRI scans
 Inflammation
 Improper sterilization can lead to blood-related disease
How can Tattoos be Removed?
 Destruction of skin (freezing, burning, surgery)
 Laser: heats layer beneath the skin, ink particles explode, lymphatic system
removes damaged skin
