Scientific Revolution
Ms. Rendek and Mr. Bell
Question
• What kinds of things do you do in your
science class?
Scientific Revolution
• Development of new technology and
scientific ideas during the 1500s and
1600s
• Begins movement away from the Church
telling people what to believe and when
people question the world around them.
Why did this happen?
• Came out of the Renaissance when
people studied how the Greeks and
Romans thought about the world
• Was an era of new inventions –
microscope and telescope
• Increase importance on mathematics and
measurements
What happened?
• Changes in the way people saw the
universe, body, and reasoning
Universe
• For a long time, people thought of the
universe as a what is referred to as the
Ptolemaic system
Ptolemaic System
Characteristics
1. Ten perfect spheres
2. Eight heavenly bodies which are crystal
orbs of light
3. A motionless Earth in the middle
(geocentric system – Earth in middle)
4. Fixed Stars on 8th ring
5. Prime mover on 9th ring – moves the
whole system in orbit
6. Heaven and God beyond
Changes made
• Some scientists make major changes after
their observations
1. Copernicus proves it is heliocentric (sun
centered) with planets moving around the sun
and a moon revolving around the Earth
Video Analysis
• Why would many scientists be fearful to
release their work and findings to the rest
of the world? Why might this delay
growth?
What is still incorrect?
Changes Made
2. Kepler proves there are elliptical
movements (ovals) instead of spheres
3. Galileo proves the heavenly bodies are
made of matter (substance) and not light
4. Newton’s law of gravitation proves how
they all move together (until Einstein’s
theory of relativity)
The system we know today!
