QUESTION:
•Our moon is known as this to the Earth.
ANSWER:
•What is natural satellite?
QUESTION:
•This phase is when the moon is in between the Earth and
sun. If you looked at the moon, it would appear black or not
there at all.
ANSWER:
•What is new moon?
QUESTION:
•This moon phase happens when we see ½ of the reflected
light on the right-hand side of the moon.
ANSWER:
•What is 1st quarter?
QUESTION:
•If the moon was full, it would be full again in this many days.
ANSWER:
•What is 28 days?
QUESTION:
•When we see more of the moon each night it’s called
waxing. This term refers to seeing less and less of the moon.
ANSWER:
•What is waning? (Remember: wax on, wane off)
QUESTION:
•This term refers to the earth moving around the sun.
ANSWER:
•What is revolve or orbit?
QUESTION:
•This term refers to the earth or celestial object spinning
onto its own axis.
ANSWER:
•What is rotation?
QUESTION:
•This term allows the Earth to experience night and day.
When we face the sun, we have day. When we face away
from the sun, we have night. The sun seems to be moving,
however it’s really the Earth moving. What is the term?
ANSWER:
•What is rotation?
QUESTION:
•The Earth revolves or orbits the sun. This movement along
with this term, causes the seasons on Earth.
ANSWER:
•What is tilt?
QUESTION:
•Alaska experiences long periods of light and long periods of
darkness. Explain why this happens.
ANSWER:
•Alaska is close to the north pole. Since the Earth is tilted,
during the summer, Alaska always experiences the sunlight
since it’s tilted toward the sun. In the winter, the Earth is
tilted away and doesn’t get the chance for sunlight to reach
the latitude.
QUESTION:
•In order for an eclipse to occur, either solar or lunar, this
must take place.
ANSWER:
•What is alignment of Earth, moon and sun?
QUESTION:
•When the sun, moon and Earth are in this order and
completely aligned, we have this type of eclipse.
ANSWER:
•What is solar eclipse? (This eclipse is difficult to look at
because you are looking directly at the sun to see the moon.
It looks like a black sunny-side up egg with fire around the
outer edges.)
QUESTION:
•The moon is typically 5 degrees off alignment with the sun
and earth. How many degrees does the moon lie in an
eclipse?
ANSWER:
•What is zero degrees or perfectly aligned?
QUESTION:
•The moon can appear red when a lunar eclipse takes place.
Tell the alignment of each celestial object in this type of
eclipse.
ANSWER:
•What is sun, Earth and moon (full moon to be exact!)
QUESTION:
•The moon appears to have light. Tell what is really
happening.
ANSWER:
•What is the moon doesn’t have its own light and is reflected
light from the sun. We see different phases at the moon
orbits/revolves earth. The earth casts shadow on the moon
and that’s why we have different phases.
QUESTION:
•Information about our solar system is constantly changing
due to this.
ANSWER:
•What is improved technology?
QUESTION:
•Scientists have to look at other planets for possible life or
using another planet to inhabit (live). What are two factors
that must be considered?
ANSWER:
•What is temperature and atmosphere
QUESTION:
•The planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are part of
this. They are mostly rocky planets.
ANSWER:
•What is inner planets?
QUESTION:
•The asteroid belt separates the first 4 planets and then
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These planets are
called this.
ANSWER:
•What is outer planets?
QUESTION:
•There are 3 main reasons Pluto was demoted to a dwarf
planet. Name the three reasons.
ANSWER:
•What is Pluto hasn’t cleared the neighborhood? It is too
small to be considered a planet and its orbital path is
different that the rest of our planets.
QUESTION:
•How is Earth different from other planets because of this.
ANSWER:
•What is it has oceans and lakes?
QUESTION:
•Each day we have this many high tides and this many low
tides.
ANSWER:
•What is two high tides and two low tides?
QUESTION:
•The moon is mainly responsible for tides occurring. Tell how
this happens.
ANSWER:
•The gravitational pull of the moon attracts the water to it
almost causing it to pull toward the moon. When one area
experiences high tide, the opposite side of the Earth also
experiences high tide. At 90 degrees of the high tide, those
areas experience low tide.
QUESTION:
•When there is a new moon, we experience this kind of tide.
ANSWER:
•What is the largest tide- spring tide?
QUESTION:
•When the Earth experiences 1st and last quarter moons, we
experience this kind of tide. Not as extreme, but still a high
tide.
ANSWER:
•What is neap tide?
