First planet from the sun.
There are no moon on
Mercury.
There are no rings on Mercury.
There are 88 days in a year.
59 Earth days in a day.
The early Romans named Mercury after
the messenger of their gods because it
appeared to move more quickly through
the sky than did any of the other planets.
Not much was known about Mercury until
it was studied by a radar from Earth in the
1960.
Mercury’s density is 5.4 which means the
planet is 5.4 times heavier than an equal
amount of water.
The reason for Mercury’s density is its
enormous, heavy core of molten iron,
about 2,250 miles across.
Second planet from the
sun.
There are no moons.
There are no rings .
224.7 days in one
year.
243 Earth days is one
day.
☺The surface of Venus is incredibly hot as
much as 900° F day and night.
☺In 1980 , the pioneer Venus obiter space
craft bounced radio waves off the planet to
measure the heights of mountains and the
depths of vales to within a few hundred
feet.
☺About 70 percent of the surface of Venus is
a vast desert of rolling plains (light blue).
♦ Third planet from
the sun .
♦ One moon.
♦ No rings.
♦ 365.3 days in a
year.
♦ 24 hours in a day.
Earth’s atmosphere is
made of gases and bits of
dust and water.
Oceans cover nearly threequarters of Earth.
The night lights are called
aurora.
Earths magnetic field acts
like a shield.
Fourth planet from
the sun.
2 moons .
No rings.
687 days in a year.
24.5 hours in a day.
Mars is sometimes called
the red planet because
iron oxide (rust) in the soil
makes it shine a reddish
or orange color.
Two thousand years ago
the red color made the
Romans think of blood
and war so they named
Mars after their god of
war.
♠ Mars has
craters,
mountains,
volcanoes,
plains, and
valleys.
☼Fifth planet from
the sun.
☼At least 16 moons.
☼2 rings.
☼12 Earth years is
one year.
☼9.8 hours is one
day.
♫Jupiter is 480 million miles from
the sun.
♫Jupiter is the biggest planet in
the solar system.
♫1,300 Earths could fit in Jupiter.
♫Jupiter’s atmosphere is made
of hydrogen gas.
☻. Sixth planet
from the sun.
☻At least 17
moons.
☻29.5 Earth years
is one year.
☻10.7 hours is
one day
►It was named after the
Roman god of farming.
►Saturn is 890 million
miles from the sun.
►About 750 Earths could
fit inside Saturn.
►The rings are made of
ice.
o Seventh planet
from the sun.
o At least 15 moons.
o 10 rings.
o 84 Earth years is
one year.
o 17 hours in one
day.
It is about one and threequarter billion miles from
the sun.
Fifty Earths could fit
inside Uranus.
Uranus’s magnetic field is
closer to its equator than
its poles.
Uranus’s clouds are over
350°F.
☼Eighth planet
from the sun.
☼8 moons.
☼4 rings.
☼165 Earth years
is one year.
☼16 hours is one
day.
Neptune is 2.8 billion miles
from the sun.
Neptune is thirty thousand
miles across.
Forty two Earths could fit
in side Neptune.
Neptune has two dark
storm spots that resemble
Jupiter’s Great Red spot.
