What is gravity?
• Gravity is a force that attracts all objects toward each other.
• The law of universal gravitation states: Every object in the
universe attracts every other object.
• The strength of the force of gravity between two objects
depends on two factors:
• The mass of the objects
• The distance between the objects

What keeps objects in orbit in the
solar system?
• Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
• The greater an object’s mass, the greater its inertia.
• Newton’s first law of motion says that an object at rest will
stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with a
constant speed and direction unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force.
• Inertia and gravity combine to keep objects in orbit. Gravity pulls
planets toward the sun and keeps them from moving off in a
straight line. Inertia keeps objects moving forward so they do not
fall toward the sun.
