Who is she ?
A beauty named Chang’e
on the moon.
The story about Chang’e
told us that we human
beings had been
dreaming of traveling to
space for thousands of
years!

Good afternoon, everyone. I’m so glad
to be here to tell you something about outer
space and space exploration. Space explor ation began in 1957 with the launch of the
first artificial satellite. Unmanned spaceships
have been launched into space since 1959. By
1961, people were orbiting the Earth. Yuri
Gagarin from the former Soviet Union
become the first human being to travel in
space.
Read the first part of the speech and complete
the time line of the main events mentioned.

launch: n. (航天器的)发射;(产品的)上市…
e.g. the successful launch of …
a product launch
v. 发射; 把(航天器等)发射上天…
e.g. Does everyone know how to
launch a spaceship?
orbit: v. 绕轨道运行; 围绕…运动;
e.g. The earth takes a year to orbit the sun.
n. (天体等运行的)轨道
e.g. the earth’s orbit around the sun
a space station in orbit round the moon
A new satellite has been put into orbit
around the earth. (一颗新的人造卫星被
送上了环绕地球的轨道.)
What’s this?
A launch tower.
launch pad
a platform from
which a space shuttle
is sent into space
What lifts the space shuttle into space?
Two rockets.
What happens to the two rockets after
they separate from the space shuttle?
Fall into the sea and a ship will pick them up.
tracking ship
Read the speech and fill in the blanks using words
we learnt before.
I guess some of you are dreaming of becoming an _____
and traveling to _____ to carry out _______. If this comes
true, you’ll probably travel by ____, a spaceship that looks
like an aeroplane. Two _____ supposed by a launch tower
will lift the space shuttle into space. Some time after the
rockets and the space shuttle are ______, the rockets will
separate from the space shuttle and fall into the sea. Then
a ship will pick them up. Astronauts will do their research
in a base in outer space shuttle called _______. Sometimes
they go out of their space shuttle to take a _______. In
outer space astronauts cannot take off their _____, which
protect them and provide oxygen. In 1965, Alexei Leonov
from the former Soviet Union became the first human
being to take a walk in space.

Today’s space exploration
Today, most important planets have been
examined. Photos have been taken and
samples have been collected from the
planets, but no evidence of life has been
discovered on any of the planets so far.
Scientific research still continues.
