California Science Standards
As a basis for understanding this concept, the students know:
a) the sun, and average star is the central and largest body in
the solar system and is composed primarily of hydrogen and
helium.
b) the solar system includes the earth, moon, sun, eight other
planets and their satellites, and smaller objects such as
asteroids and comets.
c) the path of a planet around the sun is due to the gravitational
attraction between the sun and the planet.

2.3 Write a research report about important ideas,
issues, or events by using the following
guidelines:
a. Frame questions that direct the investigation.
b. Establish a controlling idea or topic.
c. Develop the topic with simple facts, details,
examples, and explanations.
Instructional Objectives
Students will learn about each planet.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of gravitational attraction
between the sun and planets and how it influences the path of the
planet.
Students will be able to describe the solar system, naming the planets,
natural satellites, and the sun.
Students will understand the differences between the sun, planets and
natural satellites.
Students will write a narrative on each planet based on facts collected.
Students will create a watercolor poster showing the characteristics of one
planet.

Use the selected web sites to find specific information on
each of the nine planets. Using the the fact sheet supplied
Students will write a narrative report for each planet using
the fact sheet.
Select a planet. Splatter black paper with white paint.
Cut a circle from white paper. Use watercolors and paint
the planet of your choice. Label your paper with name of
planet and your name.
Write a creative story about an imaginary planet.
Portfolio Checklist
Title Page = 5 points
Table of Contents = 5 points
Each Narrative = 5 points
Each Picture = 5 points
Missing information, neatness and spelling will be counted in the categories of narrative and picture.
Results
EXCEEDS- 7 Students received a 90 points or better on their finished report.
MEETS- 10 Students received 80 to 89 points on their finished report.
DOES NOT MEET- 4 Students received 70 to 79 points on their finished report.
TITLE I- 4 Students received 69 points or lower on their finished report.
