CICADAS AND GOLIATH BEETLES
LAUREN FILAK
Can you guess which insect is first?
Solve the riddle to find out:
It comes thrice in Connecticut, but
not once in New England.
THE FIRST INSECT IS…
HA, HA! I’M NOT TELLING
YOU!
YOU HAVE TO GUESS!
It comes once in ice, but not in
cone.
It comes twice in copycat, but not in
Xerox.
It comes thrice in aardvark, but not
in mice.
It comes once in day, but not in
night.
It comes once in art but not in cut
Answer:
cicada!
Wingless cicada nymphs live
underground for 17 years, sucking the
juice out of plant roots
They emerge as winged adults and have only
seven days to find a mate and lay eggs. The
chirping we hear is the male adult cicadas
thrumming their tympani, for only the males
vocalize
Also, you know it is summer when these insects
begin to sing in loud, creaky tones. Only the
males sing--and sometimes in deafening chorus.
Its scientific name is
MAGICICADA SEPTENDECIM
They are found in and near
woods
So many facts!
Females damage twigs and
branches when she lays eggs on
them.
They sing all summer long. It turns out that
the guys aren't singing for the enjoyment of
human listeners, though. They sing and wait for
a signal, a flick or wing movement from the
females.
The northern, eastern and
western varieties take 17
years to fully grow, but the
southern varieties take 13
years.
When a male sees a response to his song, he
stops singing in the chorus. He moves closer to
the female and sings just to her. She flicks her
wings. Then the male sings his special courtship
song.
The parts of a cicada are: 2
pairs of wings, legs, 2 short
antennae, head thorax and the
abdomen.
NOW, THE GOLIATH BEETLE!
Wow! It’s so
huge!
JUST BY LOOKING AT THE PICTURE
AT THE FRONT, IT’S PRETTY
OBVIOUS THAT GOLIATH BEETLES
ARE HUGE FOR A BUG!
That’s an adult’s
hand!
NOW THE FACTS!
THEY LIVE MOSTLY IN
AFRICA.
THEY MAY LOOK
DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF
THEIR SIZE, BUT THEY ARE
NOT. EVEN LITTLE
CHILDREN IN AFRICA PLAY
WITH THEM AND KEEP THEM
AS PETS!
SCIENTIFIC NAME: GOLIATHUS
CACICUS
You should try
these foods!
They’re delicious!
GOLIATH BEETLES
HAVE THE HEAVY
WEIGHT TITLE OUT OF
ALL BUGS.
THEIR LENGTH IS
6IN. AND THEY
CAN WEIGH AS
MUCH AS A RAT!
GOLIATH BEETLES
EAT POLLEN,
FRUIT, SAP FROM
TREES AND
CROPS
THEY HAVE 2 PAIRS OF
WINGS; 1 MAKES A HARD
SHELL AND FOLDS OVER
THE OTHER SOFTER
WINGS.
