What might get in my way of
earning credits?
–If you earn a grade in a course
below 70, you will not receive
credit for that course.

project that would be fun, but
also something that they don't
already know how to do.

important.
Phone numbers and email addresses are
used during the summer to assist if
there are course issues.
Please be sure that Student and Parent
signs the bottom of the page.

On the back cover is the Honors & Advanced
Placement Contract. Student must meet 3 of
the 4 criteria.
These courses are typically the most
demanding and require additional work in
and out of the classroom.
Please print the title of each course.
Student and Parent need to sign after reading
the Contract.

Criteria for placement in an Honors course at West Carteret:
• A final average of 90 in a related course in 8th grade
– For example, 90 in Science to be recommended for Honors Earth
Science
– For Algebra I, students may have a final average of 85 or better
• EOG Reading scores from 7th grade – Level 4 (since 8th
grade scores are not yet available) – for Honors English,
Honors World History, and Honors Earth Science
– EOG scores in Math from 7th grade must be used as a guide for
math courses.
– Algebra I EOC scores may be used when they become available.

• Drama I: This course is for those students who wish to
participate in acting.
• Theatre Arts I: This course is for those students interested
in set design, set construction, scene and property painting,
theatre and shop safety, costume design, sewing, makeup
design, light design, and other technical aspects of the
theatre.
• Art I: This course is offered to all students and artistic
talent is not required

• Principles of Business and Personal Finance: This course
introduces the major principles and concepts that are the
foundation for future study of business and management.
• Digital Communication Systems: This course is designed to
teach basic digital input skills including keying using the touch
method, speech recognition, and use of handheld devices. This
course is required for all higher level computer courses.

• Agriscience Applications: This course focuses on integrating
biological/physical sciences with technology as related to the
environment, natural resources, food production, science and
agribusiness

• Teen Living: This course examines life management skills in the
areas of personal and family living; wellness, nutrition, and foods;
financial management; living environments; appropriate child
development practices; fashion and clothing; and job readiness.
• Foods I: This course examines the nutritional needs of the
individual with emphasis on the relationship of diet to health,
kitchen and meal management, and food preparation.
• Parenting & Child Development: This course introduces
students to responsible nurturing and basic applications of child
development theory with emphasis on the parents’ responsibilities
and the influences they have on children while providing care and
guidance.

• Construction I: This course provides a basic introduction to
construction work and the technical aspects of carpentry. Topics
include safety, measurement and identification, selection and use
of tools, equipment, lumber, materials, and fasteners.

• NJROTC I: This course covers citizenship, leadership and the
value of scholarship in attaining life goals.
• NJROTC II: This course builds on Naval Science I. It develops
citizenship and leadership and introduces technical areas of naval
science. The course includes maritime history, oceanography,
meteorology, astronomy, and physical science.

• Introduction to Engineering Design: Students discover the
world of Engineering through planning, building and analyzing
models and learning to use design software. This course is a real
world “hands –on” problem solving course and is offered at
standard and honors levels. It is the first course in the Project
Lead the Way program and is appropriate to students interested
in pursuing a bachelors or associates degree in Engineering or
who want to strengthen their knowledge of math, science and
technology.
