ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
EPHS AND CONNECTING WORLDS
MUNDOS UNIDOS
Established as an extension of the Mesita /Wiggs
Connecting Worlds Mundos Unidos program
Only GT students were eligible
Main area of focus has always been dual
language math and science
Has been in existence since 2003
Graduated first cohort in 2007
SINCE THEN…
GT and Non-GT are now eligible to apply
A Dual Language Coordinator was hired (shared
between EPHS and WMS)
Added dual language math and science sections
Added GT Independent study and internship
Currently has 124 students
Will graduate 25 seniors this year
SINCE OCTOBER…
New Board member asked if the program could
be revamped
Interim Principal Baca began researching
Meeting with Assistant Superintendent
Gave us permission to think outside the current
curriculum
Committed support, resources
New curriculum was presented to the Interim
Superintendent’s Cabinet for approval in
December
New curriculum was approved
FOR NEXT YEAR…
11 new dual language courses have been added to
the curriculum and are under development
6 will begin 2012-2013
4 year curriculum
New courses are designed to compliment existing
DL courses
New courses address the need for “up-keep” of
secondary language
Dual Language core courses are of a social
sciences/humanities type nature

Students are required to take a set of dual
language core courses
Students must earn at least 5 credits of Spanish
Students must be enrolled in at least 2 dual
language courses each year
Students must earn at least 7 dual language
credits for dual language graduation recognition

Academic literacy skill of secondary language
Prior Dual Language experience

IMPLEMENTATION
Class of 2012 and 2013: (current Seniors and Juniors)
will be grandfathered in to current curriculum
Class of 2014 and 2015 (current Sophomores and
Freshmen)
Will be given credit for any dual language courses
taken
Students will choose a pathway and register for
appropriate courses
Class of 2016
Will be assessed and placed on a pathway prior to the
start of the new school year
IMPLEMENTATION CONT.
This is a “live” curriculum
DL curriculum committee will meet regularly to
monitor progress: make appropriate changes if
necessary
DL faculty will meet regularly to:
Coordinate efforts in aligning and implementing new
curriculum
Revise pathways if necessary
Revise probation policy if necessary
Re-assess/revise admissions process for 2012-2013
and beyond
