Guatemala.
 Discrimination at
the age of 13
 First close contact

Family Losses
 One brother died from
poor nutrition.
 Another died from
insecticide poisoning.
 Her third brother was
torture and killed.
 Mother was kidnapped,
tortured, and killed.
 Father was killed by
Guatemalan army.
Opponents
 Rigoberta’s
opponents were
the Guatemalan
government.
 The government
opposed better
conditions for
indigenous
peoples.
