Born in Chimel, a
village in
Guatemala.
Discrimination at
the age of 13

Family Losses
One brother died from
poor nutrition.
Another died from
insecticide poisoning.
Her third brother was
torture and killed.
Mother was kidnapped,
tortured, and killed.
Father was killed by
Guatemalan army.
Opponents
Rigoberta’s
opponents were
the Guatemalan
government.
The government
opposed better
conditions for
indigenous
peoples.
