I want to know how castles
were built in the middle ages,
how they evolved over time,
and what were their
strengths and weaknesses. I
will select just the World
History database to limit my
search.

This set of results looks more
promising. There is an article on
medieval castles. I’ll start there.
Notice that there
are images and
video as well.
These may not be
available for every
topic.
Click in the boxes next
to the kinds of results
you want to see, then
click on “Filter,” and
the results you want
will go to the top of
the search results
I can expand each
heading under “related
entries” to see what
else there is to read.
If I click on an arrow,
it opens up the drop
down menu so I can
see what is there and
click on it.
When you click on
an article title, it
takes you to the
article itself. From
there you can see
an overview,
background
information, or
Examine.
You can also find
related entries:
places, other
articles, and
I can e-mail the
document to
myself or check its
MLA citation.
Don’t print the
document at
school.
To e-mail the
document, click on the
link and enter the
information. Keep
citation style set at MLA
and the article will
include a correct
citation for you.
You can bring up
images, click on them
and see the images.
You can open the
glossary terms tab
and find out what
some of the words
mean. Just click on
the glossary term to
go to a new page with
the definition.
Sometimes there is a
video you can watch to
give you a little more
information.
If you think of a new term to
use for a search, go to this
box where you see the
question mark. It begins a
new search.
This box searches for a
search term WITHIN just
the set of results you
just brought up. It won’t
look in other places, so
you will probably not
use this box much. Be
careful to use the right
search box!
mit your search to a
period, country, region,
go the Advanced Search
op, and you can open it
or more terms.
There is no “workspace” section in
this database to save your work,
though you can look under Search
History to see the terms you have
used in this session on this
computer. It is a good idea to email your results home to yourself.
Your Turn
Go to ABC-CLIO, select only the “World History Ancient
and Medieval Eras” section, and do a search for “medieval
knights.”
Click on your first result to open up the article.
When your article comes up, open up the drop down
menus for images and video.
Click on two images and click on the video. Watch the
video.
Open the Objects and Artifacts drop down menu. Click on
one of the results. When it comes up, e-mail that article
to yourself.
When you are finished , show Ms. Garrison or your
teacher the box that says “Thank you. Your e-mail has
been sent.”
