Early Years
Born near Busseto in the region of EmiliaRomagna in 1813 to a family of innkeepers.
Graduated with honors from local gymnasium in
1827
Befriended Antonio Barezzi (Italian merchant)
who helped him financially.
Growing up
Verdi studied privately in Milan from 1832-1835
than returned to Busseto and was appointed
music director until 1839.
In 1836 he married Margherita Barezzi who was
the daughter of Antonio.
His family relocated to Milan in 1839 since Milan
was emerging as the musical capital of Italy
His Wife and Child died in Milan within the next
2 years

For the first time, Verdi
composed an opera set in
his time period.
This opera is about the
intimate anguish of a
high class courtesan who
is trapped in her frivolous
lifestyle. (She is suffering
but cannot show it
because she has to make
a living)
Nabucco (1842)
Credited as Verdi’s first
big success in the opera
world
His first 2 operas did not
end up as good as
Nabucco
The opera follows the
plight of the Jews as they
are assaulted and exiled
from their homeland by
Babylonian king Nabucco
Performed at the Teatro
alla Scala in Milan
Later years
Verdi’s operas changed with the time. His
inventiveness in music got progressively
better with age.
His career spanned more than half a
century and he died in 1901 at the age of
88.
