Academic Decathalon (First Semester)
Grades: 9-12
This course is designed to prepare students for the rigorous Academic Decathlon,
an AIA-sanctioned interscholastic competition held each year in the
Spring. Students will be exposed to a diverse curriculum which includes topics in
Mathematics, Economics, Literature, Science, Social Science, Art, and
Music. Students will also prepare speeches and essays for competition.
Speech & Debate (Second Semester)
This course is designed to prepare students for competitive speech and
debate. Its goal is to improve students’ skills in speaking, listening,
composing, and reasoning through practical experiences and applications,
especially during scheduled competitions. It will feature an emphasis on
forensics which will necessitate extensive practice and rehearsal in oral
performances such as humorous interpretation, dramatic interpretation,
duo interpretations in humorous and dramatic, duet acting,
extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, original oratory,
congressional debate, public forum debate, and Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Prerequisites: Must have passed the Reading and Writing
portions of the Compass Test
Course Description: This course is a study of the major
philosophers, philosophical questions, and methods of the
western philosophical tradition. Topics covered will include
the nature of philosophy, human nature, reality and being,
god, knowledge, truth, ethics, freedom, politics, and art.
