Pathway to
Engineering
Mission
PLTW’s mission is to ensure that the United
States succeeds in the increasingly
high-tech and high-skill global economy
by partnering with high schools to prepare
students to become the most innovative
and productive in the world.

Curriculum
• Four year program with at least four
courses
• Curriculum emphasizes math, science,
computer sciences
• Students should show strong interest in
math, computers, and science to
participate in this program
BENEFITS:
• Explore engineering careers before
college
• Learn skills necessary in engineering field
• Possible college credit for some courses –
36 colleges and universities participating
Benefits Outside of Engineering
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Participate as part of a team
Lead teams
Speak to a public audience
Conduct research
Understand real-world impacts
Analyze data
Learn outside the classroom
21st Century Learning
• Concurrent with current math and
science curriculum
• Assessments and objectives align
with national math and science
standards
APPB LEARNING:
Activities Based
Projects Based
Problem Based
Centers on hands-on projects that have real-world
applications. Makes math and science relevant.
Projects
• Require extensive
research
• Have students
synthesizing new
knowledge
• Require students to
work with, not for
their instructors
Example problem from a 2002-03 Engineering Design and Development™ class
Example Project
• Students select a
project, simulate the
circuit, breadboard
and troubleshoot it
• They design and
fabricate a PC board,
solder the
components, present
the project with a
work summary report

Curriculum
Four year program:
9th – Introduction to Engineering Design
10th – Principles of Engineering
11th – Digital Electronics
12th – Engineering Design and Development
Introduction to Engineering -
th
9
The major focus of this course is to expose students
to the design process, research and analysis,
teamwork, communication methods, global and
human impacts, engineering standards, and
technical documentation. Students use 3D solid
modeling design software to help them design
solutions to solve proposed problems. Students will
learn how to document their work and communicate
solutions to peers and members of the professional
community. This course is designed for 9th grade
students.
Principles of Engineering –
th
10
This survey course of engineering exposes students to
some of the major concepts they’ll encounter in a
postsecondary engineering course of study. Students
have an opportunity to investigate engineering and hightech careers. Students employ engineering and
scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design
problems. They develop problem-solving skills and
apply their knowledge of research and design to create
solutions to engineering challenges. Students learn how
to document their work and communicate their solutions
to peers and members of the professional community.
Digital Electronics –
th
11
This course is the study of electronic circuits that are
used to process and control digital signals. Digital
electronics is the foundation of all modern electronic
devices such as cellular phones, MP3 players,
laptop computers, digital cameras, and highdefinition televisions. The major focus of the DE
course is to expose students to the design process
of combinational and sequential logic design,
teamwork, communication methods, engineering
standards, and technical documentation.
Engineering Design and Development -12
This capstone course allows students to design a
solution to a technical problem of their choosing.
They have the chance to eliminate one of the “Don’t
you hate it when…” statements of the world. This is
an engineering research course in which students
will work in teams to research, design, test, and
construct a solution to an open-ended engineering
problem. The product development life cycle and a
design process are used to guide and help them
reach a solution to the problem. The team presents
and defends their solution to a panel of outside
reviewers at the conclusion of the course.
