VOCABULARY
Transcript - Record of student’s grades, courses, grade point
average, and ranking in class
Unit of Credit - Based on a minimum of 140 clock hours of
instruction
Elective - Additional courses that are not required to meet the
total minimum to earn a diploma
SOL Test - End-of-Course tests which are required by Virginia
Department of Education
VOCABULARY cont’d
Verified Credit (V) - 140 hours of clock instruction,
successful completion of course requirements and achievement
of a passing score on the SOL test
Advanced Placement Course - A course that is externally
moderated and exceeds the expectation of grade level
objectives for a specific subject; these courses will receive
weighted credit
Weighted Credit - Refers to the point value assigned to an
Advanced Placement course
Change to High School Grading
System
Eighth grade students are graded on a high school grading
system

Pre-Algebra: is the traditional math class for eighth graders
Algebra I: Pre-requisite = Pre-Algebra/Ext. Math 7 & Pass Advanced 8th

Geometry: Pre-requisite = Algebra I & Pass Advanced Algebra I SOL

Daily attendance and completion of missed work if absent

Selecting an AP course - Should be based on student’s
ability, past record of achievement, interest in the subject,
and career goals
College Credit - May be available depending on student
performance on Advance Placement final exams; Credit is
awarded by the university, not the high school

Lack of homework completion
Lack of study skills
Poor organizational skills
Poor attendance
High schools report that 9th grade performance is the
primary predictor of high school success. Attendance
and NHI are the biggest stumbling block to on-time
high school graduation.
