ESP World
History
The idea of a web-based journal was first voiced
at the turn of the centuries by Simon
Winetroube, then ELT Projects' Officer at the
British Council, Russia. It was later discussed at
the 8th ESP Anti-conference in St. Petersburg,
Russia in October, 2001.

Democratic and Tolerant
There
are many academic journals that publish articles
of well known scientists but ignore beginners or people
who are just about to start their careers. Such people
need a journal which is democratic and tolerant!
We strive to give space on the site to as many authors
as possible without compromising the quality.

“I was told that the article is not recognized in
China, if it is only available at the site as an online article and not published as an journal
article. If the article is not recognized in China,
it would be useless.”

DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL
PURPOSES COMPETENCE IN TOURISM STUDIES AT TERTIARY
LEVEL
Ineta Luka, Latvia
Abstract
The topicality of the present evaluation research is marked by the changes
in teaching-learning process, which is shifting from teaching to learning.
The study implementing a mixed method research design was conducted
from 2003 to 2007 in the fourth largest tertiary education institution of
Latvia, which among other programmes provides well-acknowledged
higher education in tourism.
The goal of the research was to study the efficiency of the English
language learning model in the development of tourism specialist’s
English for Special Purposes (ESP) competence.

AN EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TO THE GENERAL
ENGLISH AND SPECIFIC COMPONENTS OF THEIR COURSE:
A CASE STUDY OF HOTEL EMPLOYEES IN CHIANG MAI,
THAILAND.
Michael William Cameron Brunton, Thailand.
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate hotel employees’ attitudes toward
two components in an 8-week course of English studies. One component was
hotel English, the other general English. The findings of this research paper
are that the participants’ attitudes toward both components did not differ
significantly. The management of the hotel preferred to concentrate on just
specific English due to the main constraints of time and money. Satisfaction
with the ESP component was high however; it was found that the majority of
participants wanted to learn general English.

AN ESP COURSE FOR TOURISM STUDENTS
Abdullah Coskun, Turkey
Abstract
This study aimed at developing a course based on the level and the
needs of second-grade tourism students at a vocational school in
Turkey. Two data collection instruments, a needs analysis and an oral
interview, were used to reveal students’ level of English and their
needs. It was found that the average level of English in the classroom
is A2 according to Common European Framework standards and
listening-speaking skills are perceived as the most needed skills at
work. It was also revealed that most of them would like to work as
waiters/waitresses or chefs and the restaurant is the most likely
setting to use English.

ON “YES, WE CAN”: LINGUISTICS POWER AND POSSIBILITY
Krishna K. Bista, USA
Abstract
In this article I address a hitherto used buzz phrase in English, “Yes, we can.”
This phrase represents various forms of meanings—challenge, possibility,
ability, permission and opportunity in social, political and linguistics
domains. I consider the syntactic and the semantic properties of “Yes, we
can.” I also compare its conventional usages with more recent treatments.
The catch phrase “Yes, we can” has standard usage in sports, music,
language, literature and politics. Candidate Obama elevated it as a slogan in
his presidential campaign.

Effectively Implementing a Collaborative Task-based Syllabus (CTBA)
in EFL Large-sized Business English Classes
Pi-Ching Chen
Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, National Cheng Kung University,
Taiwan
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to design a collaborative task-based syllabus (CTBS) for
achieving a more holistic college Business English instruction in an EFL large-sized
classroom. The CTBS integrated teacher-directed content-based instruction and
student-centered task-based instruction. The distinctive characteristic of the CTBS is
the application of the simulation companies established by learners themselves, actively
involving their specific creativity and cooperation. To create a more collaborative
authentic learning setting, the CTBS applies various interactive teaching techniques in
the four-stage learning activities: company establishment, staff recruitment, business
transaction, and feedback and evaluation.

THE EFFCTIVE TEACHING OF THE GENRE OF HOTEL BROCHURE
ZHAO Ning, Sanjiang University, China
Abstract
In this essay, genre-based pedagogy in the teaching of writing is
reviewed and discussed in the context of product vs. process approach,
genre-based approach, process genre approach, and teaching-learning
cycle. The review and discussion of the pedagogy are then related to
English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The classroom pedagogy in terms
of teaching hotel brochure (HB) as a genre is presented, which is based
on the integration of teaching-learning cycle and process genre
approach.

ESP World
The journal continues its mission to unite, accumulate and
disseminate ESP knowledge whatever it is called (ESP, EAP, EIL,
EMP, etc.) and wherever it originated.
Despite existing definitions there are various views on this subject.
The main reason of it is probably the variety of purposes,
approaches and fields.
It seems natural that new names appear under the umbrella term,
ESP.
One reason for this is to describe specific ESP field as precisely as
possible.
It seems natural, justified and healthy.
It’s a sign: ESP is alive and begets healthy off-springs.
However, supporting the idea of self-determination I would like
to advocate the idea of unity that makes us stronger.
