IONIC COMPOUNDS
FORMULA WRITING
&
NAMING
1
Writing Binary Ionic Chemical Formulas
A chemical formula represents the compound
using the elemental symbols
How to write Binary Ionic Chemical Formulas:
1) Cation is always first, anion second
2) Overall oxidation number (charge) must equal
ZERO!!
2
Writing Binary Ionic Chemical Formulas
EXAMPLE #1
potassium oxide
EXAMPLE #2
sodium chloride
EXAMPLE #3
lithium nitride
3
Learning Check #2
Write the chemical formula for the following
binary ionic compounds
A
sodium fluoride
B
cesium sulfide
C
barium phosphide
4
Writing Binary Ionic Chemical Names
A chemical name represents the compound
using the actual names of the elements
How to write Binary Ionic Chemical Names:
1) Name the cation first, anion second
2) Drop the ending on the anion and add “-ide”

Ionic Compounds and Transition Metals
• Transition metals are found in Groups 3B-12B on the
periodic table
• The charge of the transition metal varies and
depends on the element it forms an ionic bond with

Writing Ionic Chemical Formulas with
Transition Metals
How to write Ionic
Chemical Formulas
with Transition
Metals:
1) Cation first,
anion second
2) Charge of
transition metal
is in parentheses
3) Overall oxidation
number (charge)
must equal
ZERO!!
EXAMPLE #1
cobalt (II) sulfide
EXAMPLE #2
iron (II) bromide

Writing Ionic Chemical Names with Transition Metals
How to write Ionic
Chemical Names with
Transition Metals:
1) Transition metal
first, non-metal
second
2) Specify charge of
transition metal
with roman
numerals in
parentheses
3) Drop ending of
nonmetal and add
“-ide”
EXAMPLE
#1
ZnCl2
EXAMPLE
#2
Fe2O3

Ionic Compounds and Polyatomic Ions
What is a
polyatomic ion?
A polyatomic ion
is a group of two
or more atoms
bound together
that have a
charge
