System
Functions of the Nervous System
1) Receives Information
2) Responds to Information
The Nervous System
• The control
center for the
entire body.
• Made up of
brain, spinal
cord, and
neurons.
Brain
• The main organ of the nervous system; it
controls everything your body does.
Spinal Cord
• A group of
neurons along
the spine that
carries
information from
the brain to the
rest of the body.
Neurons
• Cells that carry messages back and forth
from the brain.
Nerves
• Groups of neurons.
Autonomic
• When your nervous system works
automatically, like when your heart beats.
Somatic
• When you tell your body what to do
(voluntary), like petting a cat.
Reflex
• When your body reacts without the help of
your brain.
Central Nervous System
• The Brain and Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System
