Your Nervous System
What makes you
YOU!
Do Now







Take the next five minutes in silence.
1st think for a couples minutes about the
following questions.
2nd take a couple minutes to respond to them
in writing.
1. Who are you? (Really think about
this!!!!!!!)
2. What makes you “who you are?”
3. What parts of your body are
responsible for this?
4. Why?
One more question…

Could you live if someone removed
half of your brain?
A video response.
Functions of the Nervous
System
1. Sensory- Monitors changes that
occur inside and outside of the body.
2. Integrative- Processes information
coming in, makes decisions, and
stores information.
3. Motor- Sends signals back to body
causing it to respond appropriately.
Neurons


The nervous system (NS) is made out of cells called
neurons.
A neurons 3 Basic Parts (Like a phone?)
– Dendrites- Receive messages.
– Cell Body- Contains nucleus, controls cell.
– Axons- Send messages.
Neurons

3 Basic Types
– Sensory- Bring information from
your body or surroundings to your
spinal cord (SC) and/or brain.
– Motor- Send info from brain or SC
to muscles or glands.
– Interneurons- Connect Sensory and
Motor Neurons
Receptors


Specialized cells that sense a
particular stimulus and begins the
signal from the outside world into your
NS.
Humans have 4 types:
– Movement
– Light
– Temperature
– Chemical
Stimulus
Plural Stimuli


Signal to which an organism reacts.
Change in the internal or external
environment.
