Nervous Control of Respiration
• Dorsal Group of Neurons
• Ventral Group of Neurons
• Pneumotaxic Center
• Apneustic Center
Respiratory Control centers in the Brain Stem
Respiratory control centers
Dorsal Respiratory Group
• Generation of basic rhythm of respiration i.e.
Ramp Signal
• Neurons are located with in the nucleus of
tractus solitarius
• Role of Pre botzinger complex
Schematic representation of medullary dorsal
respiratory group (DRG) control of inspration
Ventral respiratory group of Neurons
• Neurons are located in the mucleus ambiguus
rostrally and the nucleus retroambiguus caudally
• Remains totally in active during normal quiet
respiration
• Provide powerful expiratory signals to the
abdominal muscles during very heavy expiration
Pneumotaxic Center
• Neurons are located dorsally in the nucleus
parabrachialis of the upper pons
• Transmit signal to the dorsal respiratory group
•
•
It controls the “switch-off ” point of the
inspiratory ramp
It primarily limits inspiration
Apneustic Center
• Is situated in the lower part of pons
• Sends signals to dorsal respiratory group of
neurons to prevent the “Switch-off” of the
inspiratory ramp signal.
• Controls intensity of inspiration
