* Concentration camps were used to get rid off
political opponents
* Communists and socialists
* In 1935, the Nazis started imprisoning Jews and the
Gypsies because they were seen as opponents
* At first, they were used only for imprisonment then
forced labor and then mass murder
* Between1933 and 1945, 20,00 camps were
established just for killing people
*
* September 3, 1939
* Any person that voices doubts or concerns
about the war and Germany’s victory were sent
to Concentration camps and some people
didn’t even have a trial
* December 7, 1941
* Night and Fog policy
* September 18,1942
* Extermination through work
*
* The prisoners were given little food and they were
to die from starvation, exhaustion, and exposure
* In some camps, the Nazi doctors did experiments on
the prisoners
* In the camps, there was a hierarchical identification
system which was based on the nationality and why
you were imprisoned
* Severe cruelty which led to unofficial killings were
reported as suicides, accidental deaths, people
that where trying to escape, or people that were
trying to revolt, and they were even reported as
illnesses.

* There were many different reasons for
imprisonment which included:
* Prisoners didn’t even have to be charged for a
specific act to be imprisoned
* After having being found not guilty for a specific
crime
* Someone who was released from jail after serving
their punishment
* Or someone from a specific race was a “danger” to
German society
*
* The Auschwitz camp was the largest camp and
there were 3 different main camps
* Auschwitz 1 was built for 3 main purposes:
* to eliminate enemies of the Nazis
* To have laborers for construction
* To have a location to wipe out groups targeted
by the Nazis
* In the camps there were doctors that did
experiments in the prisoners
*
* Auschwitz II:
* Had sections for the women, men, and a family
camp for the Gypsies
* Gas chambers to kill the prisoners
* In November 1944 as chambers were disabled
* Auschwitz III:
* Main purpose was for rubber works and for coal
mines
*
* First camps were built after Hitler came into power
* SA- storm troopers
* Ss- protection Squadrons were involved within the
prisoners and the camps and they got their
independence form the SA
* Heinrich Himmler was in charge of the camps
* The SS were responsible for their duties of
perimeter guards and fir the treatment of the
prisoners
* The goods produced by the labor workers were sold
and gas chambers were created
