What did the “G.I. Bill” provide
for veterans?
What nation was hit by 2
atomic bombs?
Why did Truman approve of
the dropping of atomic bombs?
Only 2 nuclear weapons have been
detonated offensively, both during WWII.
The first on the morning of Aug 6, 1945, when the
U.S. dropped a uranium device code-named "Little
Boy" on the Japanese city Hiroshima. The second, a
plutonium device, was detonated 3 days later when
the U.S. dropped "Fat Man" on Nagasaki.
These bombings resulted in the immediate deaths of
120,000 people (mostly civilians) from explosion
injuries and radiation sickness, and even more
deaths from long-term effects of radiation. Use of
these weapons remains controversial.

V-J Day
On the afternoon of August 15,
1945, Japan’s emperor Hirohito
surrendered to the Allied powers.
 WWII had finally come to an end!

V-J Day in Times Square
Benito Mussolini controlled lives in
Italy as Hitler did in Germany
Blitzkrieg – Hitler’s Plan


German troops used Nazi blitzkrieg to
roar over Poland and gain land.
Blitzkrieg - lightening war;
overwhelming military force using tanks
and aircrafts
WAAC
The Women’s Army
Auxiliaray Corps provided
an opportunity for women
to help in the military
efforts in Europe and
Japan.
 140,000 joined the WAAC
and worked as nurses,
radio operators, etc.

Public Reaction to the
WAAC


Many men opposed women in uniform, warning
they would be seen as lesbians or prostitutes.
Some feared that if women became soldiers,
the Army’s masculinity would be devalued.
Gen MacArthur called the WACs "my best
soldiers", adding that they worked harder,
complained less, and were better disciplined
than men. Many generals wanted more of them
and proposed to draft women but worried
about public outcry.”
