island hopping campaign to keep
supply lines open
II. Nazis Defeated
• Hitler – “If the war is to be lost the nation
will also perish.”
• Ger. launched last offensive - Battle of the
Bulge, their last success

raids on bases, factories, rr, oil
depots
• Fire bombing cities, Mussolini
was captured & killed, Hitler
committed suicide
• May 7, 1945 Germany
surrendered
III. Defeat of
Japan
• Allies can now concentrate on Pacific
theatre
• Iwo Gima & Okinawa were very bloody
• 1944 – Japan using Kamikaze pilots

in 1945
• Harry Truman issued a warning to
Japan or face “utter and complete
destruction.”
• 1st Atom bomb Little Boy dropped
on Hiroshima on Aug. 7 (70,000),
Fat Man on Nagaski Aug. 9 (40,000)
