German Expansion by 1942
• Japan attacked Pearl Harbor 
causing U.S. to join the Allied
Powers
• Germany broke the nonaggression pact  causing Soviet
Union to join the Allied Powers
• Make a prediction: How do YOU
think this is going to change
WWII?
ABC Brainstorm
• Now that the Soviet Union and U.S. are officially on
the Allied Powers, WWII is going to see a shift in
power.
• By 1942, the war had begun to favor the Allies.
• To learn about these turning points, you are going to
do the “ABC Brainstorm” reading strategy.
• Get out a blank sheet of notebook paper.
• Label each line with the letters of the alphabet: A-Z
• While reading the section, you are going to try and
come up with an important term, idea, concept or
person that matches with each letter.
• You will then describe it, or write a sentence.
ABC Brainstorm
• Try and get all 26 letters! Follow guidelines on board
• The person with the best answers and most letters
gets extra credit!
• GOOD example:
• C: Casablanca Conference – Allied powers decided to
focus on war in Europe first.
• BAD example:
• C: Casablanca Conference
• T: The Allied Powers were winning
• I: Invasion of the Soviet Union was a bad idea.

WWII Radio Broadcast
• Many Americans knew about Europe’s war from
various radio broadcasts.
• With a partner, you are going to create your
own radio broadcast about a WWII event.
• The broadcast needs to explain the entire event
and its impact on WWII.
• You may choose to read yours to the class for
extra credit.
• Put yourself in character! How do radio
journalists draw in the listener?
