Causes of World War II
Appeasement
Europeans responded to Hitler’s actions prior to September 1939 by
following a policy of appeasement through the Munich Agreement.
Appeasement– giving in to aggressive demands in order to maintain
peace.
European leaders allowed Nazi Germany to
expand because:
nations were exhausted financially and militarily
following WWI
they thought that directly confronting Nazi
Germany would lead to WWII
They thought Nazi Germany provided a natural
buffer to the Soviet Union.

The Munich Agreement
Hitler wanted to
unite all Germanspeaking people in
Europe.
First, Hitler took
over Austria without
opposition in March
1938.
At a meeting in
Munich, the British and
French Prime Ministers
agreed not to stop
Hitler from invading
Czechoslovakia.
The Munich Agreement
is an example of
appeasement.
