Do Now “Think-Pair-Share” p. 25
Review Question #1:
A student looks under the microscope and
sees the following image.
a) Is it a plant cell or an animal cell?
-plant
b) How do you know? (Evidence)
- it has chloroplasts and cell wall;
the shape is like
“bricks”/rectangular
Review Question #2:
a) Is it eukaryote or prokaryote (look
back at p. 2 for help)?
- eukaryote
b) How do you know?
- it has a nucleus

Plant v. Animal Lab
• Complete the Elodea/Cheek Cell Lab
– Roles/Problem/Hypothesis (p.20)
– Part A: Elodea plant (p21)
– Part B: Cheek cells (p.21)
– Part C: Conclusion Questions (p.22)…Use p.15-17
for help
Elodea & Cheek Lab (p.20)
• With your partner: Follow the directions and focus the
specimen under the microscope.
• Materials Manager: Who will be responsible for taking and
returning materials? _____________________________
• Task Manager: Who will be responsible for reading each
step out loud? _____________________________
• Do-er: ____________________________ Who will be
responsible for ensuring that the microscope and slides are
set up correctly?
• Recorder: ___________________ Who will ensure that
everyone is recording down their data?
Elodea & Cheek Lab (p.20)
• Problem: How do plant cells and animal cells
differ?
• Hypothesis: If I look at plant cells and animal
cells under a microscope, then…(what
differences do you expect to see?)

Discussion - A Cell is Like… p.26
What do you notice/see in
the picture?
What do you think it is
trying to show you?
What questions does it
raise?
As a Class: Notes on Cell Analogies (p.27)
SLIDE 1:
1. What is an analogy?
• An analogy is used to compare two ‘like’ things
2. Why is a cell like a factory?
• The job of a factory is to make a product (i.e. a
bicycle, a cellphone, etc.)
• The job of a cell is to make proteins (i.e.
hemoglobin, melanin, insulin, etc.)
Slide 2: p.27
• The cell wall is like the security gates
because….
– It surrounds the factory and protects it just as a
cell wall surrounds a plant cell and maintains
structure.
Slide 3: p.27
• The cell membrane is like the door because….
– It allows materials to enter and leave the factory
Slide 4 p.27
1. The nucleus is like the
CEO/boss’s office because….
– It’s where the boss resides.
2. The nucleolus is like the
CEO/boss because…
– He controls the factory and
tells it what to do
Slide 5: p.27
• The cytoplasm is like the factory floor
because….
– It fills up the factory and connects each location
to another
Slide 6: p.27
• The Endoplasmic reticulum is like the assembly
line because…
– It moves the product (proteins) around
Slide 7: p.28
• The Ribosomes is like the factory workers
because…
– They make the products (just like they make the
protein)
Slide 8: p.28
• The Vacuole is like the Kitchen because…
– It stores food/water for the workers
Slide 9: p.28
• The lysosomes are like the custodial staff
because…
– They clean up the factory’s waste materials,
disinfect, etc.
Slide 10: p.28
• The mitochondria is like the generator
because…
– It provides energy for the factory’s machines
Exhibition Project (p.29)
• Your goal: To create your own cell analogy.
Part A. Cell Analogy Brainstorm Activity
Directions: Decide what you and your partner(s) want to compare
a cell to. For example, remember how we compared the cell to a
factory? What other analogy can you come up with? Write your
idea in the space provided below. If you change your mind in the
middle of the brainstorm session, that is okay. However, you will
need to finalize your cell analogy idea TODAY.
A cell is like a
__________________________________________________.
(write your analogy here)
Complete the table (p.29-30) for
your analogy – get approved!
AT LEAST 8 Organelles
Is/are like…
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane/ cell wall
Vacuole
Lysosomes
Ribosomes
Mitochondria
Chloroplast
Etc. etc. etc.
My reason for this is…
Part B. Create your Visual (p.31a)
Create a visual representation of your analogy. You may create a poster
or a 3-dimensional figure. (See sample poster on p.33).
Your visual MUST include the following FOUR components:
• Title “A cell is like ______________”
• Your name and your partners name
• Each picture/organelle labeled clearly
• A brief description of why its an analogy.
Example:
• “The Gatorade is like the mitochondria because it provides energy
to the players”
Part C. Plan your Presentation(p.31b)
Each person MUST explain 4 organelles
-Fill out the graphic organizer, and plan for your
presentation.
Homework #3 due Thursday!
Write a 1-2 page response to the following 4-5 questions:
1. What are cells?
2. What kinds of cells exist?
3. What are organelles? (Provide a few examples and explain
their function)
4. How do plant cells differ from animal cells?
5. What analogy did you select for this project, and why?
***Note: If you need to look information up on the
internet, remember to PARAPHRASE (put it in your OWN
words. Students who copy off of the internet will
automatically receive a zero on the written component.
Your Goals for Tuesday
