WWII – A new kind of
war
► Did
not fight in trenches like WWI
► Moved quickly using tanks, ships, an
airplanes
► Bombs dropped from air raids destroyed a
lot and killed many
► War was fought over a larger area of land
► WWII had two major fronts – battle lines
1. Africa and Europe 2. Pacific Ocean

Sea and to invade Italy

with his Nazis blamed the jews for
Germany’s economic problems
► He was using concentration camps
► Hitler made life VERY difficult for Jews
► Hitlers “final solution to the Jewish question” was
a campaign of mass murder against all European
Jews and other “undesirables” The Holocaust
► Anne Frank wrote a diary about her days during
this time.

Douglas MacArthur led Americans in
May 1942 to defeat the Japanese fleet in
the Battle of the Coral Sea
► Battle of Midway four enemy aircraft carriers
sunk – Japan’s navy never recovered
► These battles turned the war in the Pacific
in favor of the Allies.

in technology changed the way
WWII was fought
► Planes were used in many different ways
► Dropped bombs, “drones” flew without
pilots, transported soldiers, planes launched
at sea and could attack places that could
not be reached from land

military inventions: antiaircraft guns,
radar, two-way radios
► Battlefield medicines improved: penicillin
and sulfa helped fight infections, DDT used
to kill mosquitoes and other insects that
carried deadly diseases

peace and promote cooperation among
nations

► Helped other nations rebuild
► Relationships between the Soviet Union and
the US became bitter

property is owned by the government

helped countries fight the spread of
communism by giving them military and
economic help
► US and its allies became known as the free
world
The Cold War

world vs. communist nations
► The hostility became known as the Cold War
Cold War – a war fought with
propaganda and money rather than
with soldiers and weapons
► This
Cold War shaped world events for most
of the second have of the 1900s.
