The Battlefields of WWII
Mr. Williams
10th Grade U.S. History
• How did mobilization effect our
economy?
• What steps did the government
take to make sure we were ready
for war?
• Any negative?
• What were citizens asked to do
to make sure we had enough?
Dwight D. Eisenhower
• Commander of Operation
Torch in the North African
Theatre of the war
• Later he would become
supreme Allied Commander in
Europe
Operation Torch
• Invasion of Morocco and Algeria
• Roosevelt sent troops there in
November of 1942 to help the
Allies maintain control of Suez
Canal
• Needed this to maintain water
route to transport oil and to make
a push towards Italy
Tuskegee Airmen
• The Tuskegee Airmen were the
first African American military
aviators in the United States
armed forces
• Provided Air Support in both
North Africa, Sicily, and Italy
• Completed over 200 missions
• “Americans play to win at all times. I
wouldn't give a hoot and hell for a man
who lost and laughed. That's why
Americans have never lost nor ever lose
a war.”
• “Battle is the most magnificent
competition in which a human being can
indulge. It brings out all that is best; it
removes all that is base. All men are
afraid in battle. The coward is the one
who lets his fear overcome his sense of
duty. Duty is the essence of manhood.”
George S. Patton
• Tank Commander
• Helped lead Allied forces to
victory in Northern Africa,
Italy, Battle of the Bulge and
invasion of France
• May 1943, Germans surrender
in Africa
Omar Bradley

Operation Overlord which was
the planned invasion of France
• D-Day: June 6, 1944 troops
landed and invaded beaches
at Normandy
“Two hundred yards out, we took a direct
hit…Somehow or other, the ramp door
opened up…and the men in front were
being struck by machine-gun fire.
Everyone started to jump off into the
water…The tide was moving us so
rapidly…We could grab out on some of
those underwater obstructions and
mines built on telephone poles and
girders, and hang on. We’d take cover,
then make a dash thorough the surf to
the next one, fifty fee beyond.”
D-Day
• 160,000 Allied Troops
• 5,000 Ships, 13,000 Aircrafts
• More than 9,000 casualties
• From this point, Allies could
launch final push against Hitler
in Europe
Battle of the Bulge
