Women Wizards
Matching Activity
● Print out the slides
● Cut each slide so that the photo and name
are on one half and the description is on the
other half.
● Give each girl a half with a picture/name
and a half with a description (not matching)
● Tell the girls to see if they can find the
description to match their picture/name.
● Give the girls 10 minutes.
● After the time is up, have the girls report on
what surprised them about these famous
women.
Sheryl Sandberg
She was born in 1969. She is
the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of
Facebook. She got a degree from Harvard
in Economics. In 2012, she was named one
of the 100 most influential people in the
world according to Time magazine.
Ada Lovelace
She lived from 1815-1852. She was an
analyst of Charles Babbinger’s “analytical
engine” (an early mechanical computer)
and is considered the “first computer
programmer”. There was a computer
programming language named after her!
Hedy Lamarr.
She lived from 1913-2000. She was
a very beautiful and popular movie
star during the 1940’s. In 1942, she
co-invented an early form of
spread-spectrum broadcasting,
which helped us win WWII and is
used in our cell phone technology
today.
Rear Admiral Grace
Hopper
She lived from 1906-1992. She was a U.S.
Navy officer. She developed of the first
compiler for a computer programming
language, so instead of writing code in 1’s
and 0’s we can write code in English. She
invented the UNIVAC I and COBOL
computer language She found a real bug (a
moth) in this big computer - we now call
fixing any mistake in the code as
debugging.
Lynn Root
She is a partner software engineer for
Spotify. She is also the founder of PyLadies
in San Francisco, a group of women who
code in Python (a popular computer
programming language). She got a degree
in finance and economics from Babson
College in 2008, but fell in love with
programming in 2011. She says, “my
journey in learning how to code isn’t over.
I’m still very much a n00b, not as n00b as I
once was. :) “
Mia Gil Epner
She works on security for the National
Intelligence Agency in the summers and
currently attends University of California
Berkeley where she is majoring in Arabic
and Computer Science.
She uses algorithms to solve hard
problems in Cyber Security for the U.S.
Government. She developed a program to
check modules loaded on external
computers for the purpose of computer
network misuse.
Jasmine Lawrence
She is a Program Manager on the Xbox
One Engineering team at Microsoft. She
graduated from Georgia Tech, with a
degree in computer science with
concentrations in devices and artificial
intelligence where she conducted research
in the field of robotics. She was the 20122013 Ms. Georgia Tech and a member of
the National Society of Black Engineers.
May-Li Khoe
A graduate of MIT, she invents new ways
for humans to interact with computers.
She worked at Apple for the Human
Interface Device Prototyping team. She
invented a new interface concept for
Apple's Force Touch and Taptic Engine,
which are now in the MacBook, Magic
Trackpad, iPhone 6S, and Apple Watch.
Paola Mejia Minaya
She is a Senior Software Engineer for
Microsoft. She got a degree in Computer
Systems Engineering in 2006 from
Tecnologico de Monterrey.
Jess Lee
She got her computer science degree at
Stanford University. She is the Co-Founder
and CEO of Polyvore, a new interactive
fashion website. This company is a mix of
everything she loves – art, computer
technology and fashion. On her 30th
birthday, her co-workers all dressed in
exactly what she wears every day—combat
boots, black jeans, and a black top with
cutouts—and it took her until the end of the
day to finally get the joke.
Susan Wojcicki
She was born in 1968 and is the Chief
Executive Office CEO of YouTube. She was
named to Time Magazine’s 100 most
influential people in 2015. In 1999, she
was the first marketing manager at Google.
She is a mother of five children. She says,
“The reason I like my job is that I have this
desire to create things and build things.”
Alice Steinglass
She runs the product, design and
marketing teams at Code.org as the Vice
President of Product and Marketing.
Before that, she designed software for
Xbox 360. Outside of work, she volunteers
teaching computer science, literacy and
English to students and refugees.
Malala Yousafzai
At the age of 17, she became the youngestever Nobel Prize winner in 2014 and in
known all over the world. She is a
Pakistani activist who speaks out for the
education of girls and women in countries
where it has been forbidden. In 2012, she
survived being shot in the face by a Taliban
gunman who wanted to silence her
message.
Joan Clarke
She lived from 1917 – 1996 in England. She
was a cryptanalyst who was best known for
her work as a code-breaker at Bletchley
Park during World War II. She was the only
woman to work a the center of the quest to
crack the German Enigma secret cipher.
She was recently played by Keira Knightley
in the movie The Imitation Game.
Stephanie C. Hill
She is the Vice President and general
manager of Lockheed Martin’s
Information Systems and Global Solutions
business. She leads approximately 10,000
employees that are responsible for areas
like information systems and cyber
security. She was named Lockheed’s 2014
Black Engineer of the year.
Ellen Ochoa
She became the world's first Hispanic
female astronaut in 1991. She received
degrees in physics and electrical
engineering. She is a veteran of four space
flights getting more than 950 hours in
space as a mission specialist and flight
engineer. Her technical assignments have
included flight software and computer
hardware development and robotics
development, testing and training.
Julie Ann Crommett
She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
This Latina runs the Computer Science
Education in Media at Google striving to
banish stereotypes about computer science
in TV and movies. Since founding the
initiative in 2014, she has worked with TV
shows like Disney Junior's "Miles from
Tomorrowland" to encourage more
inclusive portrayals of what an engineer or
computer scientist looks like.
Ruchi Sanghvi
She was born in 1982 in Pune, India. She is
a computer engineer. She was the first
female engineer hired by the incorporation
Facebook Inc. She transitioned from
engineering to product management at
Facebook, where she oversaw Facebook
Platform and News Feed. In 2012 she
joined Dropbox as Vice President of
Operations.
Marissa Mayer
She was the first female engineer at Google
and became CEO of Yahoo in 2012, at the
age of 37. She was one of only 20 female
CEOs in charge of a Fortune 500 company.
She has a Bachelor of Science in symbolic
systems and an Master of Science in
computer science, with a specialization in
artificial intelligence from Stanford
University.
