Artificial Intelligence
• AI
– the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science which
aims to create it.
– Textbooks define the field as "the study and design of intelligent
agents"
• an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes
actions which maximize its chances of success.
– John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1956, defines it as "the
science and engineering of making intelligent machines."

– Learn or understand from experience
– Respond quickly and successfully to new situations
– Use reasoning (推論) to solve problems
– Understand and Infer in ordinary, rational ways
– Apply knowledge to manipulate (處理) the environment
– Recognize the relative importance of different elements in a situation

ASIMO is learning
• Hivelogic (a website about leading a more simple, mindful life)
– In meditation (沈思), we learn to watch our own minds (內心), to
clearly see and comprehend the process of our own thinking.
Potentially, we can learn to identify the very thing that we think of as
a “self” (自我) as being a just a set of processes.
– This is a video of the work being done with Honda’s ASIMO robot
and artificial intelligence, working toward teaching it about
conceptual object identification.
– It makes me wonder — at what point does artificial intelligence —
a set of complicated yet basic processes (複雜卻又基本的過程) —
begin to evolve (演化) into or qualify as “life” (生命)?
