The customer is one of the world’s most ambitious technology companies. It has an
operational presence on every major continent and sells its products to more than 100
countries worldwide. Their major product lines include televisions, set-top boxes,
mobile phones, air conditioning systems and refrigerators.
The customer’s INTELLIGENT COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT subsidiary is the largest electric
cash register company of china. It is a full-fund branch of the Group. The company’s
area of specialization is all kinds of commercial electric cash register ,tax-control
electric cash register, and the specialized equipment for the electric cash register . In
past 12 years, the customer’s electric cash register keep the first place among the
state-brand and become top-selling brands of electric cash register of China.

Challenges
The company has more than 10 standard models of cash registers which ranked from 586
to Pentium III grades. Due to strong competition in the market, the company was seeking
an industrial-grade custom board to migrate the systems to high performance, low power
consumption, strong multimedia support, high scalability, and cost-effective directions.
Essential I/O such as four COM port, two parallel (printer) ports are basic requirements
for cash register applications. Base on the customer’s request, AXIOMTEK designed a
digital I/O control on board to enable the automatic opening of the cash drawer.
The Dual Display feature enriched the system’s multi-media function. The cash register
isn’t just POS function anymore. It also performed the Digital Advertising function. The
display on operator’s side performs traditional cash register function while the second
display plays the advertising clip/video on consumer’s side.
Security also plays a key rule in cash register systems. AXIOMTEK designed 2 features to
ensure the system guarded securely. First, the PCI slot for Security CryptoCard to provide
cryptographic schemes to prevent unauthorized access. Second, with the company’s
proprietary software, the NVRAM keeps records on all personnel access and sales entries.
This will prevent personnel’s error in advance.

Due to the special requirements of the POS system, we
developed a custom board for customer. The board required
particular form factor near LPX, high performance, costeffective and embedded OS compatible.
Essential I/O includes six COM ports, two printer ports, DIO
with powered, cash drawer, and LAN support. low power
consumption, and industrial-grade single board computer.

The unit will be exposed in an environment with significant
dirt or oily pollution. It’s required to make the system
enclosure FANLESS however can be well operated under 45C.
