Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin’s Background
 Charles
was born in Shrewsbury 1809.
Darwin’s father was a doctor and his
mother was the daughter of Josiah
Wedgewood. Darwin was sent to study
medicine at the age of 16 and when his
family figured out that he really wasn’t a
fan of a medical career; they transferred
him to Cambrige so he could get trained
for ministry.
Charles Darwin’s Background..
 Charles
was always fascinated with the
study of insects and birds.
 Charles was never fond of school, but he
would love to hear historical lectures.
 I think Darwin knew what he was meant to
do, even as a little kid……..
Darwin’s Theory
 For
thousands and thousands of years
people believe that the world was
created by a supernatural being (god),
due to the complexity of nature (mostly us
humans and our minds). It is amazing how
Charles Darwin was able to explain our
existence using the Evolution of Nature.
 When we think of “Evolution,” we must ask
take a step back and ask ourselves…
“what is evolving and why?”
Darwin’s Theory


Darwin’s theory of evolution is based off of
five key points.
Species have great fertility. Are able to make
offspring that can grow into adulthood.
Populations remain approximately the same
size with some fluctuations.
There are limited resources but the amounts
are relatively consistent.
From these top three investigation, it could be
inferred that in such an environment,
individuals would struggle to survive.
Darwin’s Theory Cont.
 When
sexually reproducing , no two
individuals are identical. There is many
variation.
 And much of this variation is heritable.
 These two points can be inferred to: that
only the “ best” characteristics would
survive. These traits will be passed on to
their offspring.
Quote of Darwin

“Although I am fully convinced of the truth of
the views given in this volume I by no means
expect to convince experienced naturalists
whose minds are stocked with a multitude of
facts all viewed, during a long course of
years, from a point of view directly opposite
to mine. But I look with confidence to the
future to young and rising naturalists, who will
be able to view both sides of the question
with impartiality.” (Charles Darwin)
Quotes of Darwin

“In scientific investigations, it is permitted to invent
any hypothesis and, if it explains various large and
independent classes of facts, it rises to the rank of a
well-grounded theory.”(Charles Darwin)

“Man with all his noble qualities, with sympathy which
feels for the most debased, with benevolence which
extends not only to other men but to the humblest
living creature, with his god-like intellect which has
penetrated into the movements and constitution of
the solar system- with all these exalted powers- Man
still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his
lowly origin.” (Charles Darwin)
Meaning of Evolution
 Biology:
change in the gene pool of a
population from generation to generation
by such processes as mutation, natural
selection, and genetic drift.
Darwin’s Finches
 One
way Darwin really found out about
evolution was with the Finches. Darwin
found these Finches very interesting
especially because of their beak shape.
 What Darwin found out was that each
beak shape was adapted to their habitat.
