Notes
What is Evolution
Evolution- change over time, is the
process by which modern organisms
have descended from ancient
organisms.
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (17441829)
Zoologist, forunner of evolution
First person to create a theory on evolution
Incorrect Theories:
1.
Simple life forms continually come into
existence from other life forms.
2.
Life forms continually become more complex
or more perfect as they transform into new
species
CORRECT
THEORY
3. Change in species is
linked to an organism’s
environment.
Though today Lamarck's
work is considered a
major step forward, in
his lifetime he did not
receive much
recognition.
Thomas Malthus (1766-1834)
Realized that producing more offspring
than can survive establishes
competition among a species.
Populations grow as much as the
environment allows
Influenced Darwin & Wallace’s theory of
natural selection & evolutionary change
Alfred Russel Wallace
(1823-1913)
Came to the same conclusions as
Darwin during the same time frame
Co-published theory of natural
selection/evolution
Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
Who was Charles Darwin?
(Video facts)
Made observations & collected data
during Voyage of the H.M.S Beagle
(S.America and Pacific Ocean)
1859: Published “Origin of the Species”
Darwin’s Observations on the
Galapagos Islands:
Species resembled
those of the nearby
islands but had evolved
differences
He called this descent
with modification after
separating from a
common ancestor.
Darwin’s Ideas
Natural Selection states that a
struggle for life exists causing
individuals with favorable
characteristics to survive while
the other would become
extinct (Survival of the Fittest)
