Write anything you know about the theory of
evolution on a post stick note and stick it at
the front
•
If you don’t know anything write “Absolutely
Nothing” and come and do the same
Evolution is the slow,
continual change of organisms
over a very long time. All
living things on the Earth
have developed from the first
simple life forms that arrived
3,000,000,000 years ago.

While you are watching think about
what is happening, be ready to give
your answer (note down examples if
you like)
L.O. To be able to evaluate the theory of evolution and reflect my opinion

What makes
these the
‘fittest’ in
their
environment?

Darwin formed his ideas aboard the Beagle
voyage
He noticed that some creatures appeared
slightly different to others of their kind
because of their environment
Some other people had also thought about
the possibility of evolution
But Darwin was the first scientist to
propose the theory of ‘natural selection’
How did
we
survive???
Only the
strongest
survives!!

Darwin’s book: The Origin of Species
The one animal that Darwin did not discuss in
any way in his book was Man
But very quickly readers of the book thought
that the theory had to apply to Man as well
as other creatures.
The book was very controversial because
before it, most people thought that all life
had been created exactly as it was now.

Explain what Catholic
respond to evolution



Some Christians still believe that Adam and
Eve were real people
Some Christians believe that the book of
Genesis describes creation exactly the way
it happened.
But the Catholic Church accepts the theory
of evolution as well as Big Bang



Creationists reject evolution completely
In some schools in America the teaching of
evolution is banned

“Irreducible complexity” – from the
biologist Michael Behe
Some things are just too complicated to
have evolved from simpler things,
Behe says it’s a bit like a mousetrap...
Irreducible Complexity
•Behe uses the mousetrap to explain this idea.
•A mousetrap consists of five pieces: the base, the catch,
the spring, the hammer, and the hold-down bar.
•All of these must be in place for the mousetrap to work
•the removal of any one piece means the mousetrap won’t
work.
•biological systems require multiple parts working together
in order to function.
•Take one part away and it won’t work.
