Benign Biogeography The study of the distribution of biodiversity over space and time. It aims to reveal where organisms live, and at what abundance. Arthur Baney, Lindsey Pedroncelli, Tiffany Blanton, Husna Hadi Evolution • • • • Adaptive change over long time periods Only best adapted to environment survive Survivors pass on genes to offspring Next generation slightly better than last Microevolution! yay! • • • • slow evolution resulting in gene change little genetic changes being new subspecies slight evolutionary change in little time lots of microevolution results in macroevolution Microevolution -Examples- • cold weather, larger birds in North • warm weather, smaller birds in South • natural selection, pesticide, herbicide, antibiotic resistence • difference of species' color or size What is Biogeography? • Separated animals gradually change to adapt • Evolve differently to suit different environments • Example of catalysts: climate, food, predators • Can trace ancestors by circling area Macroevolution • • • • A grand scale of evolutionary change. Artemia (Brine Shrimp) had many legs. Various Marsupials don't reside in Australia. Species of Finches in Galapagos Islands. Darwin's Finches • Galapagos Finches differ slightly from mainland • Adapated to survive in different environments • When isolated, the finches evolve separately • Can trace ancestory back to mainland What is a Molecular Record? • Record of molecular structures of everything. • Part of a chromosome that isn't perfect. • Same pseudogene in same chromosomal location. • Provides evidence of having common ancestry. Conclusion of Evolution Theory • Gradual change of species over time • Evidence (biogeography, molecular record) support evolution • Explains how everything's come to be • Evolution is a very likely theory The End ...
