ACT Priorities
 Transition emerging technologies to operational use
rapidly and effectively
 Maintain a dialogue among technology users, developers
and providers
 Identify technology needs and novel technologies
 Document technology performance and potential
 Provide the IOOS with information required for the
deployment of reliable and cost-effective networks
ACT Services
 An third-party testbed for evaluating coastal technologies
 An information clearinghouse for coastal technologies
 A forum for capacity building
Integrated Sensor Packages for
Vessels of Opportunity
Self-contained sensor modules on commercial vessels can be an effective
monitoring and scientific tool
Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) Phased Implementation
Strategy (2005-2011) “Establish and sustain ship of opportunity program for
monitoring of physical, chemical and biological parameters using commercial
fishing vessels, ships using the great circle route, and barge traffic.”
ACT Workshop on Integrated Sensor Packages
for Vessels of Opportunity
Co-sponsored with ECOOT, October 10-12, 2006, at the National
Oceanographic Centre, Southampton, UK
Participants included technology users, technology manufacturers and
shipping representatives
Goals to identify current state of technology and uses, limitations and ways
to overcome them, and future directions
Current State of Technology
Several groups world wide using integrated sensor packages on vessels of
opportunity
Great majority are custom packages developed by researchers for specific
applications and questions
Advantages:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
High spatial and temporal resolution
High availability of platforms
System is protected against harsh environment
Bio-fouling can be more easily prevented
Low running costs
No power restrictions
Easier maintenance
Limitations:
•
•
•
•
Data limited to the transect
No depth profiles
Installation/retrofitting
Bubbles

ACT Workshop Recommendations
Provide vessel operators with real-time data to improve efficiency of water
treatment and vessel operations/safety
Provide data displays and explanation of societal relevance for education and
public outreach
Publish in peer-reviewed journals and
popular press to increase awareness
Encourage the acceptance of integrated
sensor systems within broader observing
systems
Avoid reinventing the wheel by
standardization of technologies and
interfaces
