Accelerating climate change by increasing the carbon
footprint from growing aggregate ICT-related energyconsumption

ICT has always provided business- and economic benefit by

But quantification of cost and benefit of ICT in relation to
sustainability has been vague

Enabling Energy-Efficiency by ICT
In recent years this discussion has been dominated by
“Smart Topics”
Direct potentials for power-grids / building-automation / trafficcontrol have been the focus, now moving to the more general
“Smart Cities”
However, the ICT-related potentials to increase energy-efficiency
reach far beyond specific vertical application that might seem
immediately appealing
Indirect effects by factor-substitution in business processes
(materials, travel, space) are significant, but do not constitute the
primary business case for innovation
Unbiased assessment methodology to quantify effects
in projects is a prerequisite for rational decisions
Management requires transparency
Energy reporting is a prerequisite for identifying significance of
efficiency improvement potentials
