King County Library System
Seattle Public Library System
Minneapolis Public Library
Columbus Metropolitan Library System
A conveyor system with manual sorting…24 hour turnaround.
3M and RFID
The ACLA RFID Task Force estimated the cost of county-wide RFID @ $20 million+.
Those cost did not include an automated system for the Library Support Center.
CLP Main is participating in an RFID pilot to gauge future possibilities.
Cost of Automated Handling
Management Systems (AMH)
King County Library System:
The total cost of the system is $3.6 million: $1.3 million for the
conveyor robotics, $1.7 million for the automated bins, and
$600,000 to tag media with RFID chips.
Seattle Public Library System
The system—including three computers, software, bins, tilting
machines, conveyors, and more—cost $5 million.

have two-sided optical scanners.
Minneapolis Public Library Shipping Sort
Items moving from the narrow belt conveyor into their ‘green’
bins…
Minneapolis Public Library Conveyor
The back section seen here are the bins that move among locations; the front
section at the back of the picture sorts items for their Central Library. Odell
is moving one, converted for use as a book truck, to send to a department.
CLP’s Phase I Implementation
Continued use of the grey bins
Reuse of the hampers within the sorting process
2 induction stations
Addition of an Ergo Table to facilitate induction
18 locations/drops installed on conveyor
Items will be sorted in waves
Phase I Processing Capacity
1100 items per hour per induction station
2200 items sorted per hour
12 libraries account for @ 45% of traffic
45% of materials will be inducted once
55% will be inducted twice in 4 waves
The Sorting Process: Waves
Wave 1: 13 libraries, 4 combined sorts, 1 miscellaneous drop
Wave 2: 1st combined sort of 18 libraries
Wave 3: 2nd combined sort of 18 libraries
Wave 4: 3rd combined sort of 18 libraries
Wave 5: 4th combined sort of 18 libraries
The system is reset after each wave to accommodate all agencies.
Wall of Empty Bins
