1. Write one or more paragraphs that compare the two methods of cell division, mitosis and
meiosis. Your answer must include at least:
1) one similarity between the two methods
2) one difference between the two methods
3) one example of a cell that divides by mitosis
4) one example of a cell that divides by meiosis
1. Mitosis and meiosis produce new daughter cells.
2. Mitosis produces 2 daughter cells from the original, meiosis produces 4 daughter
cells.
In Mitosis, daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell,
but in Meiosis daughter cells have one half of the number of chromosomes of the
parent cell.
3. Body cells divide by Mitosis
4. Sex cells divide by Meiosis

1) Meiosis occurs in the development of sex cells. Mitosis occurs in most other
cells. Identify two additional differences between these processes.
•There is an exchange of genetic material (crossing over) in meiosis, whereas there is no
exchange of such material in mitosis
•Mitosis produces 2 daughter cells from the original, meiosis produces 4 daughter cells.
•In Mitosis, daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell, but in
Meiosis daughter cells have one half of the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
•In mitosis daughter cells contain the same genetic material as the parent cell, in meiosis
daughter cells have different genetic material as the original cell
•In mitosis daughter cells are body cells, in mitosis daughter cells are sex cells (gametes)
