Geomorphological survey
by Erik, Diego, Giulia, Eero, Lotta and Hilda
On Wednesday we were in
the Special Nature Reserve
of FondoToce. We wanted to
understand how the
Mont’Orfano was born.
The Mont’orfano and
Fondotoce Reserve are
located in the region of the
Alps (as you can see in the
picture) where the African
plate and European plate
crash.
When the plates crashed, the
rocks from deeper parts of
African plate came up and
formed the Alps. Different
colours on the picture
represent different types of
rocks. Later the glaciers
covered all the region.
Lake Maggiore and other lakes and
valleys were genereted by the
movement and melting of glaciers.
After the melting of the ice all the
water gathered and flowed into
valleys and lakes. The movement of
other glaciers shaped the form of all
the Alpine chain. The Mont’orfano
was one of those mountains.
All the Ossola Valley is a U Valley.
This is because a big glacier moved
from Mount Rosa. When this glacier
arrived at end of the valley, it met
another glacier from another valley
and they crashed into a mountain.
That mountain is today Mont’Orfano.
Mont’Orfano
In this picture you can see the
movement of the glacier from Mount
Rosa.
Thanks for the attention!!!
Kiitos!!!
