Puerto Rico

Location and Capital
 Puerto Rico is located
just north-east of Florida
in the Caribbean Sea.
Puerto Rico is also a
territory of the United
States.
 Puerto Rico’s capital is
San Juan.
Initially designed to be
based off the United
States flag, also has an
uncanny resemblance to
the Cuban flag with the
colors of the bands and
triangle reversed.

Puerto Rican “Independence”
 Puerto Rico was originally populated by an
aboriginal people before being claimed by the
Spanish. This rule lasted for approximately 400
years before subsequent to the Spanish-American
war, Puerto Rico was ceded by the United States and
the Puerto Rican’s were given US citizenship shortly
after.
A Occurrence of Historical Significance in Puerto
Rico
 Puerto Rico was initially discovered by Christopher
Columbus on November 19, 1493. However, it would
take approximately a decade before a permanent
settlement would be formed on the island. This
settlement was founded by Juan Ponce de Leon.
Holiday
 Birthday of Jose de Diego, a Puerto Rican official
holiday. José de Diego (1867–1918) was a muchloved poet and politician leader. In recent years the
holiday has been celebrated on the third Monday of
April.
La Casa Blanca
The direct translation of
this is “The White
House.” When in use La
Casa Blanca housed the
family of Juan Ponce de
Leon, however, contrary
to popular belief Ponce
de Leon never lived there
only his other family
members did. Today, it is
a museum that chronicles
the life of modern Puerto
Rico's founding family. A
guided tour takes visitors
through the main rooms
of the house, which
where original and
recreated period
furniture help to capture
the spirit of life on the
island during the 16th
Century.
Puerto Rico’s Geological Significance
 Puerto Rico is composed of many extremely old
rocks. Some of the oldest rocks on the island date
back 190 million years ago which would be
considered the Jurassic era. These rocks at that time
are believed to have been located in what they would
consider the Pacific Ocean Region.
Ponce de Leon
 Juan Ponce de Leon was the first governor of Puerto
Rico and was the first to create organized
colonization on the island. He conquered this island
for Spanish rule, however, after a while in office he
was suspended from office for political reasons.
Marquita
Rivera
Was a Puerto Rican
actress, singer, and
dancer. She was in many
different shows and
shared the stage with
many famous people
including Frank Sinatra,
Mickey Rooney, Ann
Miller, and Dean Martin.
She eventually married
Eugene N. Biscardi Jr. in
New York City. They had
7 children of them their
oldest son Eugene Biscadi
III is a one time modelturned fashion
photographer. Their
daughter Jessica Biscardi
is a model and actress
and the former “Miss
New York.”
DID YOU KNOW THAT...
 Felisa Rincon de Gautier was mayor of San Juan de
Puerto Rico from 1946 to 1969. Felisa was Puerto
Rico’s most renowned social activist. She devoted her
entire life to the poor and homeless sick people,
especially children and women. She received many
awards: the Order of Merit from Israel, the Pope Pius
XII Medal of the Vatican and Joan of Arc Medal from
France… Of course not.
