Botanic Garden
Sculptures and Rock Detectives
Staffed educational visits to the University of Leicester Botanic
Garden
For one or two classes that closely supports the Art or Science curriculum
The art focused Sculptures programme is in two parts. The session based around the
sculpture exhibition starts with an introduction in which material shape, form and the setting of
sculptures is discussed. Groups then go and look at all the sculptures and choose two, one
they like and one they don’t. like. The children sketch their chosen sculptures within their
setting, record the material it is made from and explain their choice. Then, inspired by
everything they have seen, they sketch a design for their own sculpture and make it from
clay, which they take home at the end of the day.
The second part of the programme looks at natural sculptures. Together we examine how
natural materials can be used to form pictures, patterns, 3D sculptures and shapes. Then
children are given a bag and invited in groups to collect materials from the ground to form
their group sculpture. Groups choose their own setting and design a natural sculpture
together. Time is given for groups to look at each others work.
The science focused Rock Detectives programme is brought to you in conjunction with
The University of Leicester Department of Geology .The programme starts with an
introduction about how rocks are formed, They children visit all the sculpture exhibition but in
particular look at those made of rock and examine and test their different properties. The
plenary involves a game to consolidate their knowledge about the rocks they have looked at.
For both programmes;
Numbers: Up to two classes (about 70 children) per day
Timing: Sculptures - a full day Rock Detectives – 2.5 hours
Cost: £4.25 per child with no charge for adults. (Note the minimum charge is £102)
The Botanic Garden education programme aims to promote the garden and its satellite
arboretum as an educational resource, with an emphasis on bringing a global perspective to
the National Curriculum, especially in environmental and development issues.
