The Rock Cycle
Three Types of Rock
1.Igneous rock
2.Sedimentary rock
3.Metamorphic rock
Igneous Rock
• Igneous rock is created when hot, melted
magma rises from deep under the earth’s
crust, then cools and hardens.
• Example – granite
Intrusive Vs. Extrusive
Mt. Fuji
Igneous Rock
• Igneous can either be changed directly into
metamorphic rock or break down into
sediment (tiny pieces) that harden into
sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary Rock
• Rocks are weathered and eroded (broken down
and moved) by wind, water, and ice into little bits.
• These little bits of rock are washed downstream
where they settle to the bottom of the rivers,
lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded
rock is deposited on top of each. These layers are
pressed down more and more through time, until
the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.
• Example – Limestone (Chalk)
Metamorphic Rock
• Metamorphic rock is formed when pressure
and heat is applied to igneous or sedimentary
rock.
• Example – Marble
