Layers on floor of Mawrth
Vallis
Long/lat: from 341.40E, 24.20N to 341.70E,
23.60N
Rational:
Understanding the formation of the layered
unit, its depositional process, could be
helped by analyzing the large series of layers
exposed on Mawrth Vallis’ flank and floor.
Some of these layers may be exhumed only
there and not on the plateau.
Morphology and mineralogy:
The lower part of the flanks of Mawrth Vallis
and its floor show long layers of light-toned
rocks, with some dark interlayered beds. The
mineralogy changes from Fe/Mg-smectites to
Al-phyllosilicates, but most of the rocks are
Fe/Mg-smectites bearing.
MSL tasks: At large scale, study the layering,
the dips of layers, the fracturation patterns,
possible traces of the outflow that formed
Mawrth Vallis. At small scale, study the
layering, the grain structure, the mineralogy
and chemistry of the rocks and the variations
between layers.
