Weathering is the breakdown of
rock. It can be mechanical where
the item breaks down into smaller
pieces. It can also be chemical in
which the substance is change into
something else.
The rate of weathering is the rate
at which something weathers. This
can be either mechanically or
Chemically.
•Rock composition – what rocks
are composed of. This mostly
concerns The Types of minerals
found in the rock. Some types of
minerals weather faster than
others.
•Surface area – Surface area is
the total amount of surface
exposed. The more surface area,
the faster it weathers.
Smaller
rocks
will
weather
faster
Limestone is
composed mostly of
calcite, which will
weather faster
than other
minerals
Bigger
rocks
will
weather
slower
Climate-The amount
of rainfall and the
average
temperature
Climate effects the
amount at which
rocks weather
because if the
temperature is
higher and more
wet, then it will
chemically
weather faster
rainfall

Temperature
Topography
Graphic representation of the surface
features of a region on a map,
indicating their relative positions and
elevations.
Topography
• Topography is representation of the earth’s
surface features
• Topography can affect the rate of
weathering by many different factors such
as elevation and surface area
Additional factors
• Additional factors include
• When there is a high amount of
mechanical weathering it speeds up the
chemical weathering in the area too.
