What is Matter?
Matter is everything around
you. It is anything made of
atoms and molecules. Matter
is anything that has a mass.
What are the phases of
Matter?
There are 3 phases of matter
SOLID ( rocks, wood, ice)
LIQUID (water, lava, things to
drink)
GAS (air, steam)
What are each made out of?
Gases, liquids and solids are all made up
of atoms, molecules, and/or ions, but the
behaviors of these particles differ in the
three phases. The following figure
illustrates the microscopic differences.
Gas
Liquid
Solid
Here is the periodic table of
elements. Each is color coded to
show which element is a solid liquid
or gas…
PROPERTIES
The states of matter each are observed by a set of
properties and can clearly be recognized by their
unique differences
The properties are:
Density
The mass of matter divided by it’s volume
Shape
Is it a fixed shape, or has it taken the shape of the
container?
Compressibility
If we apply pressure, does the volume decrease?
Thermal expansion
How much does the volume change when heated?

HERE IS A SHORT VIDEO ON THE PHASES
