Notes:
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
When the glaciers stopped moving
forward and melted, all of the dirt, rocks
and other materials were left here.
The glaciers helped to create the hills,
valleys, and lakes in this area.
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
Glaciation: Rivers and sheets of ice move
over land carrying boulders, rocks and
sediment which can, over time, scrape land
and carve or deepen valleys.
This created two types of glacial lakes in MN
Ice-Block Lakes
End Moraine Lakes
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
Ice-Block Lakes
Make up 80-85% of all the
lakes in MN
Ice chunks from the glaciers sunk and were
buried
Ice melted and formed lakes because they
were sitting on clay soils.
(Clay holds water like a bowl)
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
End Moraine Lake
When glaciers started to melt, they
dumped huge rows of sediment called end
moraine.
This end moraine formed hills around low areas.
The hills acted like a dam, trapping the
glacial melt waters from flowing away.
(Most on clay soils)
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
Two Types of Glaciers
Continental Glaciers
Wide extremely thick ice sheets that
cover vast areas of land. They build from
the center and slope outward toward the
sea in all directions. They can flatten
mountains and plateaus.
Found near the Earth’s polar region.
Region 4: West Central Minnesota
Two Types of Glaciers
Valley Glaciers
Long, narrow bodies of ice that fill
mountain valleys.
Found in mountainous regions where
temperature is low enough that snow doesn’t
melt during summer months.

what the two of you feel are
the most important things we
talked about today.
Highlight that information.
Write 4-5 sentences explaining what we talked about today.
Pretend that you are teaching a family member all about the
lesson from today.
